Makita LS1040 10-Inch Compound Miter Saw

Review of the Makita LS1040

Easy To Carry And Easy On Your Pocket

Another miter saw I am seriously considering for my workshop is the Makita LS1040. If you’ve read many of my reviews, you know portability is really important to me and my research shows that this miter saw is a durable, easy to use, super lightweight saw with some impressive features. This one is definitely designed to combine portability with speed and precision. The fact that it’s so lightweight (only 27.3 pounds) and still has a 15 amp motor really piqued my interest, so I had to check it out and write a review. Let me show you why the Makita LS1040 is on the short list of miter saws I’m thinking about buying.

Hello, Motor!

I’ve seen a lot of miter saws with a 15 amp motor, but what makes the motor on the Makita LS1040 stand out is that pushes the blade at speeds up to 4600 rpm, as opposed to the 3800 or so rpm that you get from most miter saws. The motor on the LS1040 is pretty big, but it runs quietly and smoothly due to its built-in soft start technology. I have enough loud tools in my shop, so I could certainly make room for one that runs quietly. It would be a welcome change. The Makita LS1040’s performance is further enhanced by the electric speed controls that allow the saw to maintain a constant speed under load and power through cuts without hesitation or any bogging. That sounds pretty darn good to me.

Designed for Precision

Precision is ultimately one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a miter saw. Although portability is super important to me for personal reasons, if it can’t make precision cuts it’s just not worth getting. Crown cutting, compound cutting and other similar projects all require a miter saw that can make very accurate precision cuts. The Makita LS1040 has all the necessary features to enable it to make those all-important precision cuts.

Where miter cuts are concerned, there are a total of 9 positive miter stops at the common preset angles. When making miter cuts with the Makita LS1040 you have the ability to use the blade either left or right, for increased speed, accuracy and efficiency. This miter saw can only cut bevels on one side, but all you have to do is change the position of the material you are cutting to get the job done. You can achieve precision bevel cuts by using the dual post compound pivot arm to lock in your desired bevel angle. In addition to those features, there is also a florescent light that illuminates your work surface as well as an aluminum base that was engineered to ensure more accurate cuts.

Somewhat Limited Capacity

A miter saw with a large cutting capacity will allow you to handle a wider variety of cutting projects, but unless you work with really large pieces of material on a regular basis, the LS1040 should do what you need it to. According to Makita’s specs, for 90 degree miter cuts its max cutting capacity is 2-3/4 inch x 5-1/8 inch, and for 45 degree miter cuts (either left or right), it’s 1-3/8 inch x 3-4/8 inch. However, reviews by users say it will eaily cut 4 x 4 timbers without a problem.

Lightweight and Affordable

And now to one of my favorite topics: portability. Moving the Makita LS1040 around is easy because it only weighs 27.3 pounds. Its total size is also pretty compact (21 x 18 x 15 inches), making this a tool that can be conveniently stored almost anywhere. The small size and weight of the Makita LS1040 mean you won’t have much trouble moving it from room to room on large home renovation projects, you can transport it easily to different jobs sites, and you can use it without restriction in smaller, more compact workspaces.

Another factor that makes the Makita LS1040 really appealing is its price. Prices can change without notice, so I won’t post the current price here, but the Makita LS1040 is definitely one of the more affordable compound miter saw models on the market. I believe you should never sacrifice quality for price, but from what I have seen about the Makita LS1040, you will definitely save money without having to scrimp on quality.

It comes with Makita’s standard one year limited warranty against defects as well as a no hassle 30-day guarantee, which allows you to return the LS1040 within 30 days of purchase if you’re not satisfied with it for any reason.

Read the Manual

The most common complaint I came across in regards to the Makita LS1040 is that some users had trouble making adjustments on the saw. The solution for this issue, can be found in the handy user manual that you get with the Makita LS1040 (or you can find a soft copy online as well). Most people, myself included, do not like to read instruction manuals, but the truth is that they really can help you better understand the workings of machines like miter saws. If you have any difficulty adjusting the settings on the Makita LS1040, consult the user manual and you will find the solution.

Ending Thoughts

This lightweight saw is a strong contender for me. I like that Makita did not sacrifice power or performance to make it more portable. Its 15-amp motor is super powerful and there are several features that will help you make precision cuts. While professional woodworkers may prefer a miter saw with more bells and whistles, the Makita LS1040 is a great straight-up, no frills miter saw that gets the job done.
