DEWALT DW713 10-Inch Compound Miter Saw

Review of the DEWALT DW713

A Little Goes a Long Way With This Miter Saw!

I started my research into finding the best miter saw on the market with the DEWALT DW713 10-inch compound miter saw because several people I know have one and they all recommend it strongly. Not to be one who goes blindly along with the herd, I just had to play detective and do some quality research to find out for myself if it is as great as they say.

Anyone who knows anything about power tools knows the DEWALT brand is renowned for producing high-quality tools, and that includes some of the best miter saws on the market today. If you have many woodcutting jobs to do around the house or on your job site, you understand the value of having a versatile and dependable miter saw around. Let me share with you what I learned about this miter saw and you can determine for yourself if it lives up to the hype.

Powerful and Accurate

One of the first things I look for when purchasing power tools is power. There’s just something about holding a tool in your hand and being able to feel the power vibrating from it. Power also means getting jobs done more efficiently. The DW713 has a powerful 15 amp motor, which is just about as good as it gets. The motor offers a 5000 rpm no-load speed that should make cutting through molding, frames and pretty much anything a breeze.

Accuracy is the next thing I check when looking for a power tool, especially one that will be used for miter cutting. The cam-lock miter handle on the DW713 is adjustable, making it easy to cut accurate angles, and the stainless steel detent plate has 11 stops for efficiency. You can cut just about any angle with this detent plate, and for me, more angles means more possibilities, which is always a good thing. There is also a detent override feature that gives you the ability to adjust the miter setting while keeping the saw from slipping into the miter detents. Unfortunately, it does not come with a laser cut guide, which can be a godsend when you need super-precision. But the good news is that the DW713 is compatible with the DW7187 adjustable laser, which you can buy separately if you really need it.

Convenient and Portable

You can easily move this miter saw anywhere you want, as it only weighs 35 pounds. If you are like me and you have a bad back, you can appreciate this even more. Sometimes it seems nearly impossible to move stuff without having to worry about injuring myself or having to call someone over to give me a hand, so I highly treasure lightweight, portable tools. There’s even a built-in carrying handle to make transporting it even easier.

Safety First

I don’t know about you, but I love my fingers right where they are and I would prefer to keep them there, so when it comes to power tools, safety is always a top priority for me. One of the DW713’s features that impressed me the most is the sliding safety fence. It’s designed to pop-up at the last second, letting you get a glimpse the blade cutting into the wood so you can confirm the cut is being made against the line, while keeping your fingers safely intact at the same time.

The fence may be too low for cutting tall baseboard, but it will work with 4.5 inch crown molding and 6 inch base molding if it’s set vertically, so you’d have to have some really tall baseboard for it to not be feasible. Some other miter saws have fence guards that just keep flying down and make it hard to see what you are doing (and being annoying as heck in the process), but at least this miter saw doesn’t have that problem. I like that.

Awesome Warranty

Who doesn’t love a good warranty? The DW713 is covered by DEWALT’s three-year limited warranty, a one-year free service contract, and a money-back guarantee that’s good for 90 days. A guarantee package like that makes the DEWALT DW713 look even more attractive. I like knowing I can get my money back if I am not happy with a purchase.

On the Fence

The fence on the DW713 is not very high, in fact, for cutting tall baseboards it may be too low. If you work with a lot of tall, thick boards this may not be the model for you, the DW715 is much better suited for those jobs. For cutting just about anything else, however, the DW713 works great. The smaller size also makes it lighter and more portable.

The People Have Spoken

The DeWalt DW713 has close to a 5 star rating on Amazon, with more than 70% of the customer reviews being 5-star reviews. Most people (not just my friends) seem to be quite happy with it, and from what I have been able to research, it’s pretty easy to see why. It has a lot of features that I like. It’s powerful, compact, safe, and “not-annoying” to use. I don’t cut very many super tall baseboards, so the fence size would be great for me.

This looks like a miter saw that could find a home in my collection of power tools very soon. The people, and I, have spoken.
